About

Asalaam Aleikum everyone, and welcome to this blog.

I am a mother of a wonderful 6 year old autistic boy and a 7 year old wonderful “typical” girl.

My family took it very hard when Amin was diagnosed with Autism, but we came to terms with it, and we have accepted Allah’s decree . There is goodness in everything, we just have to recognize it and make the best of it. Alhamdulillah, I am so fortunate to have such an understanding, a wonderful community here in Orlando who supports me and my children, overlooking some of the little misbehavior my little boy might have time to time. I have not encountered any judgmental attitudes from anyone because of his autism.

Since his diagnosis, I have met many Muslim sisters, and received many emails from so many places around the world from Muslim parents of autistic children. Those emails and conversations were full of despair, hopelessness and confusion.

One question I was always asked, “do you take your son out into the public? How do you cope with the cruelty of the society?”  “Do you fear that muslims will judge him or not accept him?”

Yes, I take my son everywhere, to as many age appropriate events that are available in the area, or wherever I might be.

And my answer to the other questions was, and insha’Allah always will be, “NO, NO AND NO!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Then I realized that I needed to do something to show my fellow Muslim parents that autism is part of our lives, and that we should accept Allah’s decree, and move forward. We continue to make du’a for him to outgrow this condition, and we have the greatest of hope and trust in Allah that He will continue to show us amazing things from this amazing child who is special in so many ways.

So here is this blog, I hope you will find some useful information here, and if you have any questions we can discuss it   so other may benefit from it as well.

  1. I’m producing a movie on autism called “The United States of Autism”. We’re traveling around the nation interviewing 20 families from all walks of life in 5 first languages discussing their world of autism. We’re almost finished in the Pepsi Refresh contest to win funding for the movie, and I am looking for a Muslim family to feature in the film. I’m looking for a family that not only is affected, but that has a positive outlook, perhaps active in their community, and has a great story. I have an information form for parents to fill out to qualify, as we have to choose based on a number of factors. Feel free to e-mail me for more information, and I look forward to highlighting another wonderful part of the autism community. Thank you.

    • I am a mother of an autistic girl who is 23 years old. we have had many ups and downs and hard roads to corss and still facing challenging behaviors everyday. I like to know more about your film and send me an application if you think she may qualify for what you are looking for. I only want to do this to benefit others in any way.
      thank you.

      • the movie was done and now it is available on Amazon. i am sure at that time she would of qualified since they wanted to show autism in different views. IA there will be another chance that she can contribute . Thank you for your comment.

  2. Thank you for your comment. I sent you an email and I am looking forward to speak with you

  3. YAY!!! I hope you get to tell your story to the world!!!!

  4. May Allah continue to reward you for all that you do sis! You truly are a gem! 🙂

  5. Salaams, just stumbled across your blog and thought I’d echo the praise on the great work. I’m recently finding solace in our Muslim community regarding autism. I’ve enjoyed all your posts immensely.

    • Asalamalikum sister.
I recently found out that my 3 year old son has autisum. I was very tenced and sacred after readying ur blocks I got stenth I am still counfuced what to do but I am working hard I have second also boy baby is their any chane of even him getting this problem plz help me and pray for my son I am from India

      • ws , It is not easy to hear that your child is autistic. But once you get the diagnosis it is a new start, and at least you know what to do and what type of help your child need. there is a research that say that if one child in the family has autism it is possible others in the same family have autism. I have to tell you I know many families with multiple kids and they have child with this disorder and non of the others have any issues. It is possible, and it is also possible to have another ASD child. You do not know, as no one knows what is the cause of autism.
We are all scared and get very nervous, but in reality we know we have to be level headed to help our kids in the best way. If you have a good family support please use them to help you in any way they can. if you do not have family support find an online support group and maybe a support group in your area.
I am here as well if you have any questions or if you just need to talk.

  7. Salaams sis. I just moved to Florida from New Jersey. It’s great to see that you have a supportive community because I know how hard it can be. I think that you are a mentally strong mother because raising an Autistic child is a very hard job. Keep up the good work.

    • wswrwb Gladys, welcome to the sunshine state. If you are around the Orlando please look me up, so we can meet.I can give you a few ideas about this place and what to do.

  8. Dear Sister,
I pray for blessings on you and your children. You are a wonderful, good hearted mother, and I am sure you will be looked on favourably. I believe that all children are a gift from the One who created us, and that the children who are born with challenges are given to the parents who are given an opportunity to show the Lord’s love to the world, and show that where there is is love, and acceptance – there can be healing. My children are autistic, and I was told when they were small, when they could not talk and misbehaved very badly in public that there was no hope for them! God’s patience and blessing has proved those who judge to be wrong! My children are now speaking, reading, going to a regular school, and are very intelligent, creative and polite and respectful. Dear Sister, please persist in your message of hope. Women are the way that the Lord will use to help heal this planet. May God shine his glory on your life and bless you and your family immensely. I pray that through your message, many will be blessed and give praise, and be hopeful. May the Lord bless you dear sister, and use your voice to reach the many. May Jesus truly bless you and keep you safe, and pour many blessings on your family, and may you have many blessed descendants and be prosperous in all your ways. Thankyou for sharing your story of hope. I am truly thankful for your sharing.

  19. I love your blog. It’s such a inspiration to me.

How are you doing with teaching Amin about religion?. I am having a hard time with my 5 year old autistic daughter to help her understand the concept of God.

Is there something that has come across your findings that would help her out?

    Thanks

    • ws Dear Amna,

Welcome to this blog. Alhamdulillah that you are concerned teaching your daughter the religion. It is very hard to teach the concept of God to any kids at that age. Most of the autistic kids are visual learners, so it is hard for them to grasp a concept of God. What you can do is to tell her stories about the religion, and what God asking us to do etc. I found it , Amin was very interested of the stories of the prophet, or any stories about religion. Also, I am including him every time we pray. he is a long way from praying but little by little some things are rubbing off of him. It takes lots of time, patients, and dua, but I am a firm believer, and i will never give up on him.
Sometimes when you are the most hopeless they will surprise you. I used to say a dua to him and made him say what Moses asked from Allah for his speech. One day we had a really bad day, I started saying that dua, but couldn’t finish it because I started crying…. he finished it for me , the whole dua flawless. I hope you will be a frequent visitor, wish you all the best.
      Salams for now

      • I am crying.., I am crying …. after reading your story. Oh Allah gives us the patience like you. I am really scared about how shall I teach my son about Allah . By reading your story I got a hope that it’s not impossible. Thank you so much sistet

        • Thank you for your comment. Just take one day at a time. He is memorizing Quran now, and believe it or not he understands too. In Sha Allah we will overcome our fear and sadness and help our children to succeed in this world.

  20. Hello my name is Christina I work with children with Autism and I help their parents find resouces. I was wondering if you know of any books you can recommend for helping Muslim parents better understand Autism. I tried googling and instead of a book I came across your blog. Thanks so much!

  24. As Salaamu Alaikum Sister,
I am a special educator, and mother to an older child with Bipolar Disorder. I have been following your blog for some time now and I am so happy to see more and more Muslims speaking out about their children with special needs. I am also currently pursuing my doctoral studies at GW University and I want to focus my research on the amount of parental support for Muslim parents of children with special needs. I would greatly appreciate it if you could fill out my survey for my current research (it should take less than 7 minutes) and pass it along to any other Muslim parents of special needs children that you know…

    JZK!

  25. Salam. I found your blog when im searching for fellow muslim moms with child with autism. I wanted to know if any muslim parents have found miracles in the black seeds with their child. I just started giving the oil to my child and hoping to hear other parents experience with it.

    • Ws. Thank you for reaching out to other Muslim parents with ASD children.
It is interesting that you asked this question about Black seed oil. I just started my son on it 2 wks ago, giving him the loading dose, but I did not started giving it to him b/c of his autism. As I was researching further, since I seen huge gains and improvements with him I realized that i will be giving this supplement for him from now on. As of now I am researching and looking for people who had taken black seed oil and wanting to know about their experience. In a near future I am planning to write about it.
Subhanallah, when you see all the benefit of the Black seed oil, you wonder why so many others are not using it. The oil taste very strong by all means, but I mix it with honey and give him fresh squeezed juice afterward and he is taking it just fine.
Please, if you do not mind share your experience with us so other may start using it as well. As the prophet sws said Black seed oil cures everything except death.

  26. MasyaAllah. Im glad to have found your blog so that we can share our experiences. Yes my exact sentiments why we didnt think of using it earlier. Ive been giving my child fish oil. When i got the realisation about what our prophet had said and searched the internet, I found out that black seeds has all the nutrients that can help our children’s problems with eg, allergy, digestion, lack of essential vitamins, fatty acids, amino acids etc.

I also just started giving her the last 2 wks! Have not written on it in my blog too. http://www.ourwaveriding.blogspot.com .So far nothing obvious to be seen but Im convinced by what our prophet said. Just need to find the correct dosage and good quality oil and hoping Allah gives us His blessings to cure our children.

Im giving her 1 teaspoon black seeds oil twice a day with meals. Im waiting for the brand amazing herbs to reach me. I live in Singapore and at the moment using the local found brand. Im now eating it myself too. Im glad my child is very good at eating medicine from spoon. Anyway the strong oil after taste disappears after drinking water. Not bad at all.

I read your blog about camel’s milk and im interested to add that to her remedy too. Its just hard to find camel’s milk here.

    • ws, I am glad you found all those healing properties. My whole intention was for giving him for his coughing, and than I found all the other benefits. My son reacts to all fish oils, and vitamin B, amino acids. I kept giving him, and dealing with the emotional outburst until I could not take it anymore. Alhamdulillah this supplement is covering all the necessary things that my son needs and more. he had some reaction to it, mostly some die off symptoms, but we are dealing with it, and his health is better.
Also, I was suspecting autoimmune disease on him b/c he was allergic to everything. The interesting thing about that is when he was incontinent he was even allergic to his own urine. Every time he had an accident if he was not changed right away , he developed major congestion. Right away meant immediately, a few minutes was even too much for him to take.WE had constant accidents at night and he woke up being congested , hardly berating and I had to give him steroids. Now, with camel milk and black seed oil he is doing well. He hardly ever have accidents, and he just had one recently at night, but there was no congestion. So, for me this was a huge breakthrough, and I think we are heading to the right direction with his supplementation. My loading dise was for him 3 times 1tsp, since he is a big boy, so I was able to use adult does. Than I suspended it for 5 days. He just started coughing so I started it back with twice daily for 1 wk, and than go back to once a week later, giving him some breaks in between.
I will be visiting your blog for sure.
      Take care

  27. Thank you for the info. I think I should up her dose to 1 tsp 3x a day too 🙂 she is 12 years old already. She only have rashes that is not itchy but many tiny red pimply like on her arms, tummy and legs. had that since she was a baby. It can get bigger and rougher or sometimes small but it never clears up. I think that will be the indicator if that pimply like bumbs clears up, I will be overjoyed knowing that its working internally. So far no meltdowns either. Come to think of it. Last monday night as I was sitting watching TV, she sat next to me and was quietly examining and touching and poking my ears and eyes. she never did that. Hmmmm is that a positive sign triggering her awareness/ observation of an eye and ear? The possibility makes me happy though 🙂

    • Well this is what i do for my son. Each kids are different, so it is up to you what regime you will use.
About the rash… have you mentioned that to her doctor? Did they tested her for any viral infection? It might be worth to look into that as well. Black seed oil is anti-viral as well, but it needs to build up in the body, so it may take a while to see the full effect on our kids.
You mentioned how she was focusing on you one night. My theory is when something captures their focus, go with it, and try to make it an educational experience. It is certainly can be a good sign if she is focusing and being interested. Try to find more one on one time with her, and capture her attention and use it for educational purposes.
Good luck to you, and I am anxious to hear more positive feed back from you with your daughter. God bless you both

  28. Yes we are still in the process of trials with black seeds oil for our children. Ive been giving her 1tsp twice a day and I dont see obvious change so now Im increasing her dosage to 3times since you already tried for your son which im guessing his already 8 or 9 years old? Is he?

The quality/concentration of the black seeds oil im giving her is also not same as yours. Theres so many possibilitis that can make our experiences different. I wish more parents will try togather so that we have more people to compare notes of the pros n cons 🙂

Im going to copy paste what we had discussed so far in my blog, hopefully more will decide to have a try. Im full of hope too that she will improves more on her focussing. There might be subtle changes that i might not notice either. I think i have to improves my focus on her too.

Every new doctor i met, i will lways mention to them about her rash but so far non of them had asked me to have her tested for viral infection. Just recently we brought her to a skin specialist and they only gave her moisturising cream with steroids to apply! Doc said its just a hereditary prevalance coz my sister and husband has it too but not as much as her. I dont have it. doc said its not dues to food sensitivitie or any illness. So i actually didnt apply the cream prescribed. I continued givinng her the black seeds oil orally and applied it on her rash instead. I guess we have to be patience for her immunity to build up as with all natural foods/treatments, it may take a while to see the goodness. I want to avoid giving her medication now. Going towards natural treatments. Still cant find camel’s milk supplier here though.

  29. Salaam, I stumbled across you blog while trying to gain some more information in regards to Autism and Islam. I have a 21 year old autistic brother, and from reading you blog assume your children are young. I am glad i have come across your blog and hope to follow up new posts. May Allah reward you for all you are doing 🙂 x

    • WS Thank you for your kind words. It is always nice to have a sibling of an autistic person reading these posts. Have you ever considered writing about your experience ideas, fears hopes, happiness about being a sibling of an ASD person? I invite you to write a post for this blog to show others what you experienced while you growing up, and now since you are adult. It would be interesting to read it and I am very sure to be beneficial for many siblings as well.
My children are still small 10 and 9 , but my daughter who is the older sibling wrote a little book about her ASD brother.
Please let me know if you are interested. All credits will go to you.
Take care and welcome to my blog.

  30. May Allah heal our children. I jut checked this about page.

  32. Salam,
I came across your blog while I was looking up for natural remedies and sourrat from quran to help my high functioning autistic six year old son with his socilal disability and misbehavior at school.
I think Autism is a gift from Allah subhananhou wa taala. My son was diagnosed last year with Aspergers syndrome, he was in a kindergarten and the school year was taugh for everybody. Everyday complains about his behavior, making noise, can’t sit still, touching the kids, hitting… The school had to place him in special class with different SPECIAL kids because they didn’t t have any other services to offer to us since it s a charter school. We didn’t like it but we didn’t have a choice, they were pushing us to medicate him but we refused. He started a behavioral therapy to treat his agressivity and occupational therapy for the sensory integration disorder for a year now and we have seen a huge progress Hamdoullah!
This year we put him in a regular public school with neurotypical kids. much better than last year Hamdoullah, but he still can’t focus, makes noise constantly ( car noise ), has trouble lining up and for the first time since he started school this year he had a physical incident at the cafeteria!! He ran at another student and knocked him down!!!! I was chocked and felt like we starting all over again.. I though we was done with the ” hitting, pushing, touching” but no! Things like that make me think and decide to medicate him for his own good and then I think about all the side effects, after all it’s chemicals and I feel like I m going to poison him. I love my son so much to hurt him!
Now I m thinking something natural, something with no side effect to help him focus, control himself and be more socially accepted!
I live in Orlando ( Disney area). If you can please tell me where can I find some natural remedies to help my son cope with his disabilities ( anxiety, agressivity, and all those autism symptoms) any Sourates from Quran, or prayers. Please share Jazaki lahou khayran!
Ps: Autism is a gift from Allah, because my son is autistic!

    • ws Mia,

Welcome to this site. Sorry for not answering you faster but i been out of town for a while.
I feel the same way about medicines, and I did not gave my son the ones that the neurologist recommended.
There are many natural options, but all kids are different, so you have to do your homework regards to those supplements.
I used Gaba at one point of time, with success and it was a short time while I was using it. Also magnesium (called Calm from vitamin shop was good for my son as well during times when he was recovering from illness and his behavior was not as anyone expected. If you choose GABA get the one that dissolves under the tongue, those are better than pills.
Since your child is high-functioning, you might want to try marshal art with him. that activity proved to be very successful with children in the spectrum.

You mentioned that you live in Orlando FL. Florida has a scholarship program that allows you to take your child out of the public school system and place the child into a private setting. You get a certain amount of money to use for the new school, and since he has autism most private school accepts the insurance that will pay for ABA services. This is something you might want to look into.
      http://www.floridaschoolchoice.org/information/mckay/
It takes a while to be approved but time is on your side. Look into it. Putting the child to a specialized school for now does not mean that he will be there for the rest of his life. If he gets the education there and behavioral issues are resolved, these schools will help him to mainstream. it is important to choose the reputable school. there are many out there who are there for business so be careful who you are choosing.
If you have any more questions feel free to email me in my personal email aminsawakening@gmail.com

I lived in orlando for many years so I can give you more resources later on if you need them.

  33. salaam Alaykoum,
Thank you for all the advices and resources, I went to GNC store to get the vitamin and supplement you mentioned in your reply but the store manager told me that they don t have those for kids ( 6 years old).
Is there any other place I can find the kids dosage?
I also read a lot about Camel milk, have you tried it with your son? Where do you buy it from?
My son goes to taekwando classes, It did help him with his balance and following directions, but this year we noticed that he so bored and doesn t like it no more! When he goes there, he doesn t focus with the instructor and plays while others forearm the movement. My husband and heard a lot about the horseback riding and its healing power on Autistic kids subhana Lah! ( equine therapy) have you looked at it for your son?
There is on in kissimee area and I will contact them to see if I can try it for my son.
Please let me know about the GABA for kids as well as Calm.
Thank you so much for the help!

    • ws Mia,

Usually you have more luck to get some of the supplements at Vitamin shoppe. They have it all over in that area, just look up the location on Google.
Also, horseback riding is a wonderful tool for all kids, and yes we had him going regularly.

I just sent an email to my very dear friend Meredith who live in the are as you are, and her son attending the very facility for horse back riding for years. I asked her if I can share your info with her so you both can talk either on phone or email. She will be a great resource for you., She is also highly educated special ed teacher.
I am waiting for her response and as soon as i have her permission i will send you a private email with the contact number or email of hers.
The supplement I told you about “CALM” is a magnesium base powder you can get that at vitamin shoppe as well and all the other things I have talk to you about. Many time children calm down with activity like the horseback riding swimming etc. I am sure you and your husband exploring every option, and I am confident that Meridith will be able to suggest activities at your are as well. I will be in touch soon.

    • Mia, I sent you a private email, check it, I wrote contact info for you for my friend at your area, as well as the camel milk contact info. Hope it will help

  34. Thank you so much!

  35. Salam’
thank you for the information you share with us.I have an autistic daughter and I like to try camel milk for her.Can you please give me some advice how to use it and what preparation it does need before to start drinking.I live in Orlando area ,is there any place I can buy the milk?Thank you and god bless you.

    • Ws Thank you for visiting my blog. Dr Hinkle has a protocol and able to give you the advice as well, and supply the milk. She comes to the Fl area too sometimes where you can book appointment with her as well if you have any questions etc. Here is the link as well hinkle.millie@gmail.com

She is very good at replying and explaining things. Also you can ow order camel milk from her company . She is supplying people across the US.When I lived there I was on the waiting list for camel milk, but now they have enough supplier so you can just get it as you needed. I had very good results with camel milk, but I was using non pasteurized milk which carries some risks. In the uS thy only supply pasteurized camel milk.
I did not follow any protocol, bc I did not have the resources where I am, I just had the pure milk. We did well that way too, but if you have a chance to obtain a protocol, which many parents already follows successfully you should. Bc the milk has so much minerals in it you might need to adjust your supplement. If you decide not to follow protocol, my advice is to start out slow. Please contact her, she will be a great resource for you in the future. Good luck, and I would love to hear from you how it helped your daughter.

  36. ASA,
mashallah this is surely a wonderful web site where I get to read the inner sadness of mothers who are gifted with special kids.I am Ummibrahim and new to this blog, I am from Virginia and do health researches and give advice to people who are dealing with health issues.I have some friends who have autistic kids, my eldest son Ibrahim deals with severe asthma and allergies , all I know is that auto immune disorders have the same underlying cause i.e Fungus or systemic yeast infection.I can give those parents valuable information about how to treat or minimize the underlying cause as I am helping my kid.

    • Ws UmmIbrahim, MA you are so beneficial to many. I agree that many times I see autoimmune disease play a significant role in autism. Almost like goes hand in hand in some cases. I had confirmation about it when my son started camel milk and his overall well being improved dramatically. Somehow immune system is involved and I truly wish that they can find that missing piece that we are all looking for.
If you have a website please share it with us so I can share it with my readers.
If you have anything else to share with my readers I ask you to please send it and I will post the information all credits to you.
Keep up this great work you do. May you be blessed for all that yu do in this life and hereafter…ameen

    • ASA,
I wish the information that I am pasting here may benefit suffering people as i believe and know that Allah has not sent any disease without a cure.My story is long but I will try to make it brief. In my previous post i mentioned that systemic yeast infection is the main culprit behind auto immune diseases, so my story began when i was struck with one of the worst yeast infection 10 yrs back,I was put on “Diflucan” , it gave me temporary relief but a lot of damage to my liver. No one ever told me that even if some spores of yeast are left in my body then the whole colony of fungus will grow back with vengeance if I’ll eat sugar and wheat again.Any way some times later I developed “Chronic fatigue syndrome” then after one year I developed the painful disease of bones named “fibromyalgia” paid thousands of visits to doctors but with no avail, in the mean time Allah blessed me with 3 kids but life was a burden for me, my husband had to all the household work, i was only 36 yrs old but felt as if I was 70.Three years after that I was diagnosed with “Interstitial Cystitis” and became allergic to every fruit and food, if i would eat a piece of apple or banana by chance I had to pay the price by peeing 20 times a day,at that point I felt that I have cancer and is going to die soon.No doctor ever gave me solution or reason for these long list of problems.I was taking Homeopathic treatment but that doctor could not even resolve my problems.I cried and prayed to Allah day and night for help,He guided me to research on countless articles about my endless problems and then I found that I have systemic Yeast Infection not just in my entire body but even in my brain as I would get brain fog very often.now coming to my first child Ibrahim ,since he came out from a sick mothers body he had the worst asthma that anyone could think off, he was allergic to ever other food.I found out that we have both same symptoms, so the reason must be same.In my next post I will mention what I found as a cure for both problems.Till then Assalam o aliqum.

      my problems, At th,

  41. Asalam aleikum thank you so much for sharing this, it’s so inspiring. I myself have a wonderful 5 year old boy diagnosed with autism , and another 4 year old boy diagnosed with a precis ans speech delay.
Alhamdulilah I accepted Allah s decree , Allah test us with as much as we can bear , alhamdulilah
However it’s not easy of course , but by the will of Allah, ans with great supporting teachers, friends, neighbour’s, family, as well as talking to other mother who also have autistic children helps a lot cause it makes me feel like I’m not alone , there are others who understand my situation .
We have to first of all have faith in Allah, always, be patient , as well as educate ourselves on autism and on how to deal with it. Of course it’s helpful also to share with one another helpful tips that can work with our children.may Allah bless all of you and grant you ease and cure to these wonderful special children ameen.asalsm aleikum wa rahmetullah Allahu akbar.

    • One thing I found helpful is to always stick with routine in daily life , that helps us and helps our children know what to expect.
Routine, discipline, organization, cleanliness, . Certainly makes the job easier for us. Also spending time with them , quality time , giving them love and attention.

      • yes, they like to have predictability, and not chaos. thank you so much for your comment. If you can share anything else we will appreciate it.
